Understanding the person before choosing the goals

People seek support for different reasons. A person may have difficulty communicating a need, taking part in an activity, managing a daily routine, or responding to situations they find difficult. These experiences should be understood in context rather than reduced to a label or a single behavior.

Meaningful Pathways uses a person-centered approach to discuss what support could be useful. This includes listening to the individual, considering the caregiver’s perspective, and identifying goals that have a practical purpose. Progress is discussed in relation to the person’s own circumstances and priorities.

Children’s learning happens in everyday activities

Play, shared activities, and familiar routines provide a context for discussing communication, participation, and daily living goals. Caregivers can help explain what a child enjoys and where support may be useful.

How we approach individualized support

A useful plan needs to account for more than a skill someone has not yet learned. It should consider how the person communicates, what they enjoy, where difficulties occur, and what support is already available.

Our director’s approach combines function-based assessment with caregiver collaboration and respect for individual autonomy. The purpose is to understand the circumstances around a behavior and use that understanding to guide teaching and support.

We also consider how a skill will be used outside a teaching activity. Communication, self-care, and participation goals should make sense in the person’s routines, relationships, and everyday environments.

What does your ABA approach focus on?

Our areas of focus include communication, social interaction, adaptive daily living, behavior support and replacement skills, and attending skills. Individual goals are discussed with the person and caregivers. A diagnosis alone does not tell us which goals will be appropriate or how support should be delivered.

How do I request an appointment?
